- The horses are hand carved from kiln dried tulip wood, a semi hardwood, being stable, strong and ideal for the purpose, other suitable timbers can also be used. They are clear varnish finished to highlight the beauty of the wood, or can be dappled grey if required.
- The bridle saddle etc. are all real leather, and the mane & tail real horsehair.
- The swing iron stands are made from kiln dried local hardwoods-mostly ash. All timbers from sustainable sources.
- The med & large horses have their heads turned to one side giving them a more realistic look.
- The horses are mounted on swing iron stands as standard rather than rather than rockers so take up less room and safer for tiny toes and fingers. If rockers are requested, that’s no problem.
I have always loved working with wood and helping to keep an old craft alive gives added enjoyment. As all horses are hand made no two are exactly alike, giving each it’s own individuality and character.
Restoring was a natural progression and can be simple jobs , like replacing mane & tails, repairing unstable or wobbly stands, carving and fitting new ears or touching up paintwork, to complete re-builds of old horses that have been in families for generations, sometimes left in sheds & cellars for years, then brought out when a new baby arrives in the family. Bringing them back to life to give pleasure to present & future generations is a very enjoyable and satisfying experience.
